YEAR 5

Term 3 has been a really busy and productive Term! It was jam packed with various curricular and extracurricular activities. Students participated in a few interschool competitions as well.

Mariam Almosawy and Hussain Alshamarry participated in the Interschool Badminton Championship, along with three Year 6 students - Ava Barker, Ibrahim Mansuri and Hassan Alshamarry, in Division 2 and they scored third place. Hina Hussain scored first place in the ‘Door Knob’ designing competition held by the Goulburn Valley Water. Congratulations to our winners!

In Measurement and Geometry, Year 5 students focused on area, volume, properties of two and three dimensional shapes. In Number, they learnt about proper, improper and equivalent fractions. They also revised how to add and subtract fractions using number lines and a fraction wall.

In Writing, students learnt about the structure and language features of an Explanation text to produce some very good writing pieces. They completed many grammar, reading and comprehension activities in class on a regular basis. They also celebrated Book Week in a remarkable way by reading story books during lunch times to whole school. Tania from Zart Art, came to our school to do Book Week workshops, in which students got an opportunity to listen to some short listed children’s books and they did craft activities based on those books. Exciting Character Parade brought the Book Week to an end and all students looked wonderful in their colourful costumes.

In Science, students covered a unit of Biology to learn about features of living things. They produced some fabulous projects to produce 3D models of a plant and an animal cell. They also learnt about the properties of different states of matter- solids, liquids and gases.

In ICT, students explored different educational games and looked at their features. They used the software ‘Scratch’ to code their own games.

Art and Sports lessons have been fun, like always. In addition to these, they also participated in Daffodil Day and Father’s Day activities.

Students will be given online homework during the term break. Encourage children to read lots of books from the Reading Eggs Library or the local library. Encourage them to use a dictionary to look for meanings of unknown words as this is the best way to build their comprehension skills and vocabulary.

Have a safe and happy term break! Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation.
